Over the past few days, I couldn't help but notice the nights started getting much colder than what I was used to for the past few months. And it made me think that well, it's about time I start sorting out my fall wardrobe!
I am sure you are already familiar with the concept of dark academia and its fashion trends. And like many others, I am quite a fanatic of it! However, lately, I am pretty hooked on the lighter counterpart, LIGHT ACADEMIA.
Both dark academia and light academia stem from the "academia aesthetic" subculture, which focuses on the pursuit of learning. Simply put, the "academia aesthetic" gives the wearer a scholarly look. A look that is often associated with intelligence and education.
This kind of fashion involves plaid clothing, tights, sweaters, book bags, reading glasses... You get the idea.
If you're someone who happens not to be familiar with either of the two you might be asking, well, alright Minnie, but what's the difference between Dark and Light Academia?

DARK ACADEMIA VS LIGHT ACADEMIA: THE DIFFERENCE
The core appeal of the dark academia aesthetic, according to aesthetics.fandom.com, is “pretentiousness and romanticizing education”. Dark academia, true to its seemingly gloomy name, has themes centered around mystery, secret societies, and cults.
Outfits under this aesthetic are centered on the scholarly look, so clothing is usually made up of somber and muted colors such as brown and other dark shades, plaids, corduroy overalls and dresses, tights, vests, tailored pants, wool coats, and boots.
Light Academia, on the other hand, gives off a more pleasant vibe to it. It has themes centered around reading novels, writing poetry under a tree, painting, hanging out at museums, sitting at neighborhood cafes, journaling… you get the idea. Sounds really pleasant, doesn’t it?
Like dark academia, outfits under the light academia aesthetic are centered on the scholarly look, so clothing is made up of light colors like beige, cream, yellow, and white. Light-color plaids and cozy sweaters fit this aesthetic, as well as corduroy dresses, cream coats, Victorian-style blouses, lace tops, flowy dresses, and loafers.
