By now, I am absolutely sure you must’ve heard at least once about Dark Academia, right? Well, many of us have always loved the dark vibe without actually knowing exactly what it is, but the prevalence of this aesthetic on different platforms such as TikTok has given this aesthetic a proper name, AND a structure.
Dark academia outfits are especially popular this season. While I absolutely love dressing in colors specific to dark academia, the aesthetic is so much more than just clothing.
WHAT EXACTLY IS DARK ACADEMIA?
Dark Academia is an aesthetic that revolves around classic literature, the pursuit of self-discovery, and a general passion for knowledge and learning. It encompasses many different areas of learning, such as philosophy, music, or even science.
Much of this aesthetic has to do with self-discovery. To put it in different words, it’s a moody theme because the dak academia aesthetic is all about looking within.
This aesthetic can be urban, suburban, or rural. The best known visual variations come primarily from European cultures.
INCLUDING THE DARK ACADEMIA AESTHETIC TO YOUR OUTFITS
Now, I personally love adding touches of this aesthetic to my outfits all year long, but I find that I especially gravitate towards dark academia in the colder months.
You’ll find that these outfits are super easy to put together, and I’m sure you already own quite a lot of clothing pieces that fit this aesthetic.
What clothes am I referring to?
Well, here’s a list of my must-have wardrobe pieces when it comes to this aesthetic!
- Blazer (tweed or plaid)
- Tailored trousers
- Blouse with a collar
- Skirt (simple, usually plaid or black)
- Black turtleneck
- Neutral, wool coat
From there, you can mix and match them, or add in other pieces until you get an outfit you’re content with! However, you will want to stick with darker colors, adding in touches of white, or neutral colors.
You can also add small, gold accessories, such as a simple necklace or small gold hoops.
When it comes to shoes, I’d recommend typically choosing either loafers (for a typical, classic look) or combat boots (for a more modern, edgy look).
I also recommend investing in a few leather belts (brown or black), as well as a leather bag (again, brown or black).
Do keep in mind that you don’t need to have every single one of these pieces to pull together a lovely dark academia-inspired look!
